Holiday Road Trip Guide
Holiday travel is a tradition for many families, whether visiting a relative in a distant state or road-tripping to a scenic national park. Wherever you drive for the holidays, make sure you follow the simple steps in this guide to ensure a safe, fun, and memorable vacation.
Clean your car before the trip. This may seem like a no-brainer, but clearing your vehicle of day-to-day debris can help tame the inevitable mess that accrues as the miles stack up. It?s also helpful to clean your vehicle every few days you travel to help maintain your sanity on a long journey.
Check your vehicle before leaving. In the week before you leave, make sure you have a mechanic check your fluid levels (oil, transmission, wiper), brakes, and tires to ensure you don?t have problems in an inconvenient location. You should also stock jumper cables in case the battery acts up.
Make sure you have your documentation. Double-check to ensure you have your license and insurance before heading out. While getting pulled over is never ideal, getting pulled over in an isolated part of a strange state while driving without an ID is a vacation-ending disaster.Have a plan, but be flexible. While your trip almost certainly has a set destination, the best road trips leave room for improvisation and checking out sights on a whim. Too much planning can lead to feeling constricted by your own vacation, while too little planning may lead to missed reservations – so try and find a happy medium for maximum fun.
Anticipate traffic. There’s a big difference between crawling into a large metropolis during rush hour or cruising through in the middle of the day, as any commuter will tell you. Keep an eye out for congestion patterns to save yourself a big headache.
Take lots of pictures and send them to us! Road trips can be some of the most fun you’ll ever have, so live it up, document the journey, and treasure the memories for years to come.
